Vote

Thank you for for signing the petition to Governor Schwarzenegger to create Harvey Milk Day.

Harvey Milk was not only an inspiration as one of the first openly gay men elected to office, but as a trail blazer who understood the value of working with allies, the importance of living our lives openly with authenticity and the power that our stories have to change hearts and minds.

A day in his honor, the first for any LGBT leader, would pay tribute to the sacrifices he made to advance equality.
Please urge your friends and family to go to www.eqca.org/harveymilkday to sign the petition befor May 22, Harvey's birthday, when the petitions will be delivered to the Governor.

Last year the Governor vetoed similar legislation. But this year, with your support, he will know that Harvey was not only a figure of local sigificance, but an inspiration for millions across the state and nation.

Warmly,
Geoff Kors

English translation

Oh Iran, oh bejeweled land

Oh, your soil is the wellspring of the arts

Far from you may the thoughts of evil be

May you remain lasting and eternal

Oh enemy, if you are of stone, I am of iron

May my life be sacrificed for my pure motherland

Your love is my calling

My thoughts are never far from you

In your cause, when do our lives have value?

May the land of our Iran be eternal

The stones of your mountains are jewels and pearls

The soil of your valleys are better than gold

When could I rid my heart of your affection?

Tell me, what will I do without your affection?

As long as the turning of the earth and the cycling of the sky lasts

The light of the Divine will always guide us

Your love is my calling

My thoughts are never far from you

In your cause, when do our lives have value?

May the land of our Iran be eternal

Iran oh my green paradise

Bright is my fate because of you

If fire rains on my body

Other than your love I will not cherish in my heart

Your water, soil and love molded my clay

If your love leaves my heart it will become barren

Your love is my calling

My thoughts are never far from you

In your cause, when do our lives have value?

May the land of our Iran be eternal

Best Doggy

I have the best dog ever, he's so cute and cuddly, he sleeps with me and every morning creeps closer and closer off his pillow to come lick my face or flip on his back so i can give him a belly rub, he's so fluffy and I LOVE HIM SO!

Haft Seen

So people ask me the meaning of different things that we put on the table and what they mean for Persian New Year and I have no clue. So here is the information!!

A few days prior to the New Year, a special cover is spread on to the Persian carpet or on a table in every Persian household. This ceremonial table is called cloth of seven dishes, (each one beginning with the Persian letter Sinn). The number seven has been sacred in Iran since the ancient times, and the seven dishes stand for the seven angelic heralds of life-rebirth, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, patience, and beauty.

The symbolic dishes consist of:

Sabzeh or sprouts, usually wheat or lentil representing rebirth.
Samanu is a pudding in which common wheat sprouts are transformed and given new life as a sweet, creamy pudding and represents the ultimate sophistication of Persian cooking.
Seeb means apple and represents health and beauty.
Senjed the sweet, dry fruit of the Lotus tree, represents love. It has been said that when lotus tree is in full bloom, its fragrance and its fruit make people fall in love and become oblivious to all else.
Seer which is garlic in Persian, represents medicine.
Somaq sumac berries, represent the color of sunrise; with the appearance of the sun Good conquers Evil.
Serkeh or vinegar, represents age and patience.

To reconfirm all hopes and wishes expressed by the traditional foods, other elements and symbols are also on the sofreh):

a few coins placed on the sofreh represent prosperity and wealth;
a basket of painted eggs represents fertility.
a Seville orange floating in a bowl of water represents the earth floating in space.
a goldfish in a bowl represents life and the end of astral year-picas.
a flask of rose water known for its magical cleansing power, is also included on the tablecloth.
Nearby is a brazier for burning wild rue ,a sacred herb whose smoldering fumes ward off evil spirits.
A pot of flowering hyacinth or narcissus is also set on the sofreh.
A mirror which represents the images and reflections of Creation as we celebrate anew the ancient Persian traditions and beliefs that creation took place on the first day of spring.
On either side of the mirror are two candlesticks holding a flickering candle for each child in the family. The candles represent enlightenment and happiness.

Happy St. Paddys Day

Went outside during work while the parade was going on and snapped a few pictures. It was chaos & I got yelled at by a grandma (New Yorkers!)

Vet

I gotta say I have the best Vet for Logan in the entire world...he is so nice and caring and when Logan was sick he took such good care of him, I felt bad crying infront of him everytime I came to visit Logan. But when he was all better I baked his entire offie a batch of cookies and gave him a big hug. :)

He's been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers on his work. Check him out. Dr. Kaplan rocks!

Here is one of his rescue dogs Toby:

Toby is a 7 year-old male, mixed-breed dog. He was adopted by Dr. Kaplan from New York's largest animal shelter, Animal Care and Control on 110th street in October of 2001. He loves to fetch, swim, eat and sleep. He can usually be found at City Veterinary Care lounging on the waiting room couches or sleeping under the front desk. His favorite toys are those that squeak. He doesn't plan to have a family of his own one day, because he is neutered. This doesn't sadden him because he knows that this City is confronted with a massive pet overpopulation problem that claims 45,000 lives in the boroughs' shelter system each year. He feels lucky to have gotten out of the shelter alive and he inspired his dad to start The Toby Project.

Rescue Me

Another great reason why our president and family is the best well they announced that they are getting a dog but not just a regular old dog but a RESCUE Portuguese-Water-Dog.

As for names this is what Michelle had to say:

"Oh, the names are really bad. I don't even want to mention it, because there are names floating around and they're bad," Mrs. Obama says with a laugh. "You listen and you go – like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn't a moose? Moose. I'm like, no, come on, let's work with the names a little bit."

Computer Gender

SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.'
'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'

A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether 'computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because:

1 No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for
possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself
spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be

Masculine ('el computador'), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

The women won.
